I have usefull prototype parts.

See my 6 month review at the bottom.

Monday I received my long awaited printer. I thought I would wait a couple of days until I had some experience and then post my thoughts. My first impressions were quite good. The unit looks good, well built with all wiring cleanly aligned and secured. My unit would not feed the filament at first so I sent an email to support and received a phone call within an hour, not many companies will do that. The support rep Charles and I went through a process of trying some things and finally found the problem with the extrusion head had been knocked off center during shipping. Once that was snapped back into place all worked as it should. My first print (white ABS filament comes with the printer) was their demo part, a miniature bird bath. It came out excellent. I then tried one of my SolidWorks parts saved in STL format and the printed parts came out terrible. Again, I emailed XYZ and received a prompt reply back from Charles to try and correct my STL files with this online free service, SAVE THIS ADDRESS you will need it if using STL files NETFABB CLOUD SERVICE. My parts were uploaded and emailed back to me within 5 minutes. It must be an automated process. You can also download a free program and do your own file corrections, no special talent needed. I then retried my parts and they came out great. This is for a product I am developing for one of my clients and the parts will be made from ABS. I have found standard stereolithography material (STL laser generated parts) are very accurate but 7% heavier than ABS. This product I am designing is very weight sensitive. So I now have all my prototype parts and will be building our first test unit. Here are some things that are not clear in the printer description

Good, not great, but better than you might think
By Greg McEntyre on April 21, 2014Color Name: .Grey Verified Purchase
Let's be clear, buying a 3D printer for $500 is exactly what you think it is. Any other system that is shipped as a complete unit is triple this cost to get high quality results. It's unfair to slam the makers of this product if you're looking for high quality at a low price point. However, if you are patient, you can tune this machine to be great. If you wanted a 3D printer, hopefully you're the advanced DIY type and don't mind getting creative.
Our system:
Out of the box we had a non-functional LCD screen like many others, and turning the unit on did nothing but have the white LED lights turn on and the X-axis motor homed. That's it. There was filament residue around the nozzle which seemed like it was a used model, or it was tested prior to shipping (but wouldn't it work out of the box if it were thoroughly tested?) A quick tour of the system's wiring found the Y-axis wiring harness had gotten loose and fallen out. No problem, reattaching the wiring harness had the system fire up with X & Y axis homing. But still no LCD screen. We popped the panels loose, traced the flat ribbon cable feeding the LCD panel and found a small cut which disrupted one of the outer thin wires. Folding that back into place with some tape fixed that problem. Now the system fires up and we could start working with the software. Is the lack of English instructions a pain in the butt, yeah, but some common sense goes a long way.
The software installed OK, but an update was needed which was easy to download and install for 64 bit Windows 7 Pro (not sure about Windows 8, may be a compatibility issue for some) That software works fine for what it is, just interprets the 3D .stl files for the printer and let's you choose your printing resolution and some other options which to me is pretty cool.

I've had the Creator X for a month after having used a MakerBot Replicator 2 for a month. Overall, I'm happy and finding the printers comparable once you muck about with Makerware for a while. Below are 2 sections- first a comparison for purchasing decisions, then a guide on how I customized Makerware for Creator X.

Replicator 2 vs Creator X
Despite being a power suck, the Creator X heated build plate is a great improvement over the unheated Replicator 2 build plate. ABS requires a heated build plate, and even with PLA it makes prints come out much better. With Creator X I heat to 70 C for PLA and I still have the original Kapton tape after having printed about 100 times, making for perfectly smooth surfaces where the model touches the plate. With the Replicator 2 I had to replace the painter's tape with nearly every print, the prints would still warp at any corner touching the tape, and the surfaces that touched the tape would be a bumpy mess.

Replicator 2 has one print head, Creator X has two. I'm not crazy about that trade off, maybe because I'm using this for injection mold prototyping and don't care about dual color prints. The second print head adds weight and can knock against built layers, requiring slower print speeds and making it harder to print arrays of pieces. It's nice to have for quick color swapping and as a backup in case there's a break in one print head, but on balance I would rather it wasn't there. That's a sad thing to say about a feature that costs a good deal of money.

In terms of print quality, I'm finding the Replicator 2 was better at 45 degree overhangs and 90 degree corners. The Creator X seems to curl up corner layers and sag the overhangs, even after I mucked endlessly with Makerware settings.

TL;DR: the FlashForge Creator Pro is A Makerbot Replicator clone with all of the community enhancements "out-of-the-box." The result is in some ways better than the replicator 2X, for about half the cost. What's not to love?

I have been a long time Makerbot Replicator owner, and I've been very happy with that printer. There's a lot to like about the printer, and the support provided by Makerbot has been first-rate. It has been a workhorse, cranking out thousands of prints over the years. I really like the basic design of the printer, with the build area large enough to create interesting things, but not so deep that the printer takes up too much space. I really like having two extruders, both for flexibility of working with multi-material prints and for convenience such as being able to continue printing with one extruder when the other extruder needs maintenance, or leaving one extruder loaded with ABS and the other with PLA so that I can switch materials effortlessly. And with the heated print bed, I've been able to print with ABS, PLA, Nylon and all sorts of other crazy materials (wood, flex, bronze, etc.). But perhaps most importantly, the user community for Makerbot printers is amazing, so whenever there are was something about the design that needed improving, the community jumped in and came up with improved extruders, metal print platform arms, and even the amazing Sailfish firmware. In many ways the community really made the Replicator the wonderful printer that I've been using all these years.

But my old printer is getting a little long in the tooth, so I wanted to buy a new printer to supplement it.

ine Customer Review of Free Product

I am a Vine reviewer, and really put a lot of effort into testing the products that Amazon sends me. This was no exception.

Upon receipt, this seemed utterly fantastic. It was boxed in a secure, fun way, and their marketing department did a great job of building the enthusiasm with color and design.

The unit itself looks great. The color-changeable LED lighting is tricked out and can be a lot of fun.

The preloaded patterns are simple, but Dremel is trying, I assume, to give you entry-level projects to get your feet wet with. More on this in a minute.

I need to preface the rest of this review with the fact that a good friend of mine is an engineer at JPL and uses 3D modeling printers daily, both in professional and personal life. I asked him to help me with this review, so you, the Amazon customer, can have a more wide knowledge-base from which to decide on your purchase.

The first thing we did was to print a test print--the preloaded frog. It was a lot of fun--rather magical--to see. It didn't come out perfect, but I chalked that up to user error.
Onto the next...I did the preloaded pencil holder. Again, this was going to require a lot of sanding to make smooth--and there were some areas that didn't seem quite solid. (See pictures)

After the first two prints, I started having trouble with the filament extrusions not sticking to the supplied Dremel sticker surface (supposedly good for 80 uses). The jobs were coming up, sticking to the extruder, and creating a HUGE mess. I ended up with quite the pile of wasted filament. At 30 bucks a roll (more on this later), that can add up quickly
